AMD showcases Ryzen 5000 series CPUs and teases Radeon 6000 GPUs
Well Today was the press conference. And AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, did not disappoint. AMD is ready to dominate the market and has come out the gate swinging harder than they did back during the Ryzen 3000 release. This event was more for the ZEN 3 showcase but the tease of Big Navi during the event gives us some insight on how the 28th press conference will be like.
Below is the announced line up.
Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 Processors MSRP Cores/Threads Base / Boost Freq. TDP
Ryzen 9 5950X $799 16 / 32 3.4 / 4.9 GHz 105W
Ryzen 9 5900X $549 12 / 24 3.7 / 4.8 GHz 105W
Ryzen 7 5800X $449 8 / 16 3.8 / 4.7 GHz 105W
Ryzen 5 5600X $299 6 / 12 3.7 / 4.6 GHz 65W
Seeing how chip binning is a thing, there will most likely be non X versions of the 5000 series Ryzen 5 and 7.
Part of the event also went on to explain that the 5000 series will be drop in compatible with most 500 series board with testing of 400 series beginning in January of 2021. This of course means you will lose PCIe 4.0 Support with compatible 400 series boards. With the current AM4 socket boards having a 142W max power draw, there appears to be some room for overclocking.
During the event, AMD stated that the Zen 3 microarchitecture delivers up to a 19% IPC improvement over previous Zen 2+ microarchitecture. Part of the reason for such improvement is owed to the optimized 1nm process that was used for the Ryzen 3000 XT models and the L3 cache being unified to 32MB clusters per 8-core chiplet.
Some may have noticed that the price at launch is slightly higher than the 3000 series, AMD reassured consumers laying out that they still hold the lead for price per core performance. AMD has also stated that the 5000 series 9 and 7 Processers will not include coolers. AMD clarified that they believe most euthenists choose 3rd party cooling solutions so there is no need for them.
What do you think of AMD's new CPU lineup? Are you excited, disappointed, or are you just hoping Intel takes up the challenge? Let me know in the comments.
