Hideki Kamiya to Leave PlatinumGames
In a post on Twitter today, September 25th, PlatinumGames announced that Hideki Kamiya will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, 2023.
Quickly echoing their statement, Hideki Kamiya confirmed that he would be leaving in a post of his own stating that it was after "a lot of consideration" and was "by no means an easy decision to make." The quick timing of the posts suggests that this was a decision that had been discussed internally and was not coming out of the blue for either party.
Kamiya has made an impact on the gaming world by directing Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Ōkami as Clover Studio. After Capcom closed Clover Studio he went on to found PlatinumGames in 2006 along with Shinji Mikami and Atsushi Inaba. It’s with PlatnumGames that he went on to direct Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, and more. It was reported that he was directing Project G.G., a game that we know very little about, other than a quick teaser trailer with no gameplay. It had been said that the game was going to be part of a “superhero trilogy” alongside Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. With neither announcement mentioning what Kamiya will be working on after his departure, the future of Project G.G. is a mystery. While it’s possible it could continue, it’s hard to believe that it would correctly capture the essence of a Hideki Kamiya game without him.
As is the case with many initial parting-of-ways statements, the decision seems to be leaving everyone on good terms with very few details of what is happening next. While both statements are quite vague, it does seem like this had been a decision on Kamiya’s part. Additionally, the statement, “We believe that he will continue to succeed in his future endeavors as a game creator.” from PlatinumGames leads us to believe it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest Kamiya will be moving on and announcing other projects after October.
What kind of project would you like to see from Hideki Kamiya ? Let me know!
