Steam Next Fest Indies Worth a Wishlist!
The latest Steam Next Fest has just wrapped up and there has been plenty to feast our eye upon in the indie world. Featured below are just a few displays of the impressive work of indie devs and with eye-catching detail, beautiful art, and unique gameplay features these are all worth a wishlist!
Saltsea Chronicles by Die Gute Fabrik is a visual treat. The muted and playful colors further the whimsical tone of the game. While the visuals are busy, they’re not overpowering. The narrative of the game doesn’t shy away from harder topics and it makes for a more fulfilling experience that goes beyond surface level. You’ll visit many Islands in the game, and may not even need to visit them all to finish it, but it might be worth a few plays to really get a look at all the content. Not to mention there’s an Island called Los Gatos you can visit, and it is inhabited by plenty of adorable vector graphic felines. Players will be able to set sails sometime in 2023.
This gritty and grimy art style is almost as satisfying as the combos and fighting in Fortune’s Run. As the developers, Team Fortune, said themselves, this looks to have the perfect “campy tone of space operas.” It’s always fun when games with gore but don’t take themselves too seriously, and makes this a title that you’ll need to check out when it releases this September 1st. Fortune's Run
The beauty of video games is there is something out there for everyone and the quality of the trailer alone makes Goodbye Volcano High worth considering. KO_OP has made this “cinematic narrative adventure” all about teenage dinosaurs in a band. With “dino minigames” and music-themed gameplay sprinkled in. What really stands out in Goodbye Volcano High is the quality of the song and voice acting. Nothing sours a game like horrible voice acting! If I had just heard this trailer without the gameplay, I would have bought that this was a cute coming-of-age movie about high schoolers. The song is catchy and well-produced, and with voice actors like Lachlan Watson from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it could end up being a star when it launches on August 29th this year.
“A Sentient Bread on a Quest,” says it all. Born of Bread has endearing characters and turn-based combat as well as timed challenges. You’ll play as a flour golem defending his land and meeting quirky characters each with a lot of personality along the way. The developers, WildArts Studio Inc., say that the game’s story will still involve serious topics, but that it will remain “joyful and funny.” The bright and colorful 3D world contrasts the simple yet effective character designs and delivers an endearing and exciting game. The release date has not yet been announced, best to wishlist to stay updated!
Tactic Legends describes itself as a “cross-platform, player-vs-player, turn-based tactical strategy game.” There are 10 playable characters and over 100 items to bring with you into battle. This game looks like it’ll be a hit with those that like to strategize as you can only bring 4 of those items into battle with you. You’ll be able to customize your fighting style and team and battle players from all around the world as it will be online PvP. In a noteworthy comment from the developer, Cameron Wills, we learn that this will not be a pay-to-win game and anything available for purchase will either be a time saver or cosmetic. “Tactic Legends is designed so that players who never spend a dime have the opportunity to unlock and acquire everything the game has to offer.” This is pretty cool considering this is already set to be a free-to-play game and there will not be ads. Tactic Legends is set to release on October 10th of this year!
