What Did the Ubisoft Forward Have to Offer?
This year's Ubisoft Forward brought us some interesting and exciting sneak peeks and announcements for the near future. Here are a few big highlights of all the game trailers we saw! If you’re interested in seeing it all for yourself, here’s a link including the pre-show and post-show content.
Star Wars Outlaws - 2024
The trailer for Star Wars Outlaws was beautiful, riveting, and adorable. We saw 10 minutes of gameplay from the first open-world Star Wars action-adventure title and were introduced to the scoundrel Kay Vess and her Merqaal (axolotl alien) friend, Nix as they pull off what Ubisoft calls “one of the greatest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen.” The game offers players multiple avenues for engaging with the scum and villainy of the Star Wars universe, whether through wielding influence, shaping their reputation, or utilizing cold hard credits. The trailer introduces us to a few other endearing and mysterious friends and gives us the chance to see what the action is like on the back of a speederbike when a blaster isn’t enough. All and all it looks like a fun original story set between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that everyone can jump into and enjoy.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - Dec 6th 0f this year
The trailer for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks admittedly stunning, but a bit predictable considering everyone who saw the movie will be familiar with the setting. You play as a Na’vi that was captured and trained by humans to use their weapons. After waking up from a 15-year cryosleep with the humans that captured you gone, you are reunited with your Na’vi culture and seemingly re-learn what you have missed. Some people have said that it feels like “Far Cry on Pandora” so, take that as you will. The trailer shows opportunities for cooking, shooting human weapons, using Na’vi weapons like a bow and arrow, and riding and interacting with the flora and fauna on Pandora. It might not be reinventing the wheel of gaming, but that doesn’t mean it won't be a fun time.
Skull and Bones Closed Beta - August 25-28th
In more recently available news, the Skull and Bones closed beta will open for 3 days this August. This game has faced plenty of scrutiny over the closed betas that have been active in the past, and it’ll be very interesting to see what Ubisoft has done in regard to the *hopefully* constructive criticism it has received. During the Ubisoft Forward, we were shown a very cool sea shanty with some scenes and visuals from the game but no real gameplay. The song and trailer combination was fun but seemed to lack the jubilant atmosphere that usually surrounds sea shanties and instead felt more sinister. Is this a hint at what we might experience from the game? See for yourself by registering for the closed beta here.
