Ready to die? Next Up Hero launches today on Steam Early Access.

In Next Up Hero, the impossibly-hard bullet hell game out today on Steam Early Access, you’re going to die. A lot. There’s monsters and mechs and rockets, and they’re all trying to end you. But in Next Up Hero, death is just the beginning.

Because every time you die, you leave behind an Echo of your character who can be resurrected by all future heroes who play in this session. Echoes are literally shadows of their former selves, so they don’t do as much damage as a player-controlled hero. But when you have the max 16 echoes fighting by your side, you are going to do some damage.

It’s a new mechanic developer Digital Continue calls Community Continue. It was inspired by taking turns with friends at the arcade to beat unfairly difficult games. The idea being that beating a game with friends, or in this case, a community, is more fun than beating a game on your own.

The game features nine hand-drawn heroes who look cute but are armed to the teeth -- with everything from swords and rocket launchers to laser turrets, bongo drums, and boomerangs. Digital Continue says more characters are on the way post-launch.

This the first original game from Digital Continue, based in Queens, New York. Digital Continue was founded by Joe Tringali, who you may remember as the co-founder of 5TH Cell, creators of Scribblenauts, Lock’s Quest and Drawn to Life. In Next Up Hero, Tringali hoped to create a hard-as-nails arcade game that not only encouraged community involvement, but demanded it.
